Canelo Álvarez Open to Fighting Jake Paul, Confirms Trainer Eddy Reynoso
The Mexican boxing superstar has several potential opponents on his radar—including YouTube star Jake Paul.
Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez has yet to announce his next fight, but several names have been floated, including Christian Mbilli, William Scull, Terence Crawford, and even Jake Paul. His longtime trainer, Eddy Reynoso, recently confirmed that Paul is indeed a potential opponent.
Reynoso: "Everything is Negotiable"
Speaking to reporters, Reynoso stated that any of these fighters could face Canelo, as long as the terms make sense and are beneficial for the boxer’s career.
"The same names are in the mix—(Terence) Crawford is being considered for September or even May. Jake Paul is also being talked about a lot on social media. There’s William Scull, another top-ranked fighter in the WBA and WBO. So, there are a few options for the May fight. As long as it's negotiable and makes sense for Saúl's career, that's the direction we'll go in," Reynoso explained.
Canelo’s Last Fight: A Statement Win Over Berlanga
Canelo’s most recent fight took place on September 14, when he stepped into the ring against Puerto Rican fighter Edgar Berlanga. The Guadalajara native dominated the bout, winning by unanimous decision after knocking Berlanga down in the third round. However, despite the knockdown, Berlanga managed to go the distance.
With that victory, Canelo reaffirmed his dominance at 168 pounds. The four-division world champion currently holds three of the four major super middleweight belts (WBA, WBO, and WBC), solidifying his position as one of boxing’s biggest stars.
What Happened to Canelo vs. Terence Crawford?
For months, there was heavy speculation that Canelo vs. Terence Crawford could happen in 2025. The undefeated American was willing to move up two weight classes to take on Álvarez. However, The Ring reported yesterday that the fight is now off the table.
Crawford, 37, has repeatedly expressed his desire to step into the ring with Canelo.
"I heard him (Canelo) say I’d be an easy fight. If that were true, he’d take all the money that Al-Alshikh is offering him," Crawford said in an interview on The Porter Way Podcast.
Saudi Arabia’s Role in Boxing's Biggest Fights
Turki Al-Alshikh, a Saudi sheikh and entertainment mogul, has been instrumental in bringing high-profile boxing events to the Middle East. He was behind major fights like Dmitry Bivol vs. Artur Beterbiev, and he reportedly wanted to stage a megafight between Canelo and Crawford.
Canelo’s Take on Future Opponents
For his part, Canelo has made it clear in multiple interviews that he is open to **fighting anyone—**as long as the financial and sporting terms make sense. He has also emphasized that, at this stage in his career, he has earned the right to choose his opponents.
