Boxing Fans Still Waiting for Canelo Álvarez vs. David Benavidez Showdown

Boxing fans are still eagerly waiting for a fight between Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez and David Benavidez, but the match has yet to materialize. “Red Flag” has repeatedly called out the Mexican star, but so far, he hasn’t gotten the response he’s looking for.

A few days ago, Canelo spoke on The Ring Podcast, making it clear that he has already fought the best in the sport and that he wasn’t a fan of the way “The Mexican Monster” has been going about challenging him.

“At this stage, I’ve fought everybody, every champion, and the best out there. But when someone comes at you like that, calling you out the way he does, you don’t have to give them the payday. Like I said before, I can do whatever I want now, and honestly, I just don’t like the way (Benavidez) went about getting this fight,” said the four-division champ.

Benavidez Fires Back

David Benavidez didn’t hold back in his response, saying that trash talk is part of the game. According to him, it adds excitement and helps sell the fight.

“If you want people bowing down, saying ‘Oh, thank you for the fight,’ then go ahead and keep fighting those kinds of guys. But that’s not how this works, and I’m not backing down for anyone,” Benavidez told Fight Hub TV.

The undefeated fighter also made it clear that he’s not dwelling on a potential Canelo fight right now. Instead, he’s fully focused on his upcoming bout with David Morrell, as he aims to unify the division.

“I’m not thinking about that fight. I’m just focusing on what’s right in front of me. I knew this fight with Morrell was a real possibility, we made it happen, and now I’m locked in on this. After that, I’m coming to unify the belts,” said Benavidez.

What’s Next for Canelo Álvarez?

As for Canelo, he has yet to announce his next opponent, though Eddy Reynoso recently revealed that two names are in contention for a May fight. According to his trainer, Christian Mbilli and William Scull are both on the Mexican superstar’s radar.

A fight between Canelo and Scull seems like a strong possibility. The Cuban fighter currently holds the IBF super middleweight title, the only belt missing from Canelo’s collection to fully unify the division. Scull himself recently stated that his team has already started negotiations for the potential matchup.

Meanwhile, Christian Mbilli is another solid candidate to face Canelo. The Cameroonian-French fighter is ranked #1 at 168 lbs by both the WBC and WBA. The 29-year-old remains undefeated with a 28-0 record, with 23 wins by knockout. However, it’s worth noting that he has yet to compete for a world championship.

For now, fans will have to wait and see who Canelo Álvarez chooses for his next big fight. But one thing is clear—David Benavidez is still gunning for his shot at the champ.
